Fernleigh Explorer

The Fernleigh Track is a popular 15km rail trail, allowing cyclists to travel through pleasant bushland and wetlands discovering rail relics of days-gone-by.

In this immersive cycling experience you will learn about Newcastle and Lake Macquarie's rail history through numerous railway relics preserved throughout its length. Riders can expect a leisurely ride with welcoming rest areas dotted along the path, mixed in with former train stations as we pass through notable local suburbs.

The Fernleigh Track also has a very significant Awabakal history, with forests, wetlands and an ancient sand dune system mixed with plenty of unique flora and fauna as the landscape changes throughout the ride.
Photo opportunities are aplenty as we discover the infamous Fernleigh Tunnel, Whitebridge, Redhead and Jewells Stations. If time allows we will stop for a coffee somewhere off the beaten track subject to tour duration and time of day.

What We'll Do

You will meet your guide at Adamstown Station (or Belmont TAFE) for introductions, a safety briefing and an insight of what to expect for the next 4 hours.

This experience follows the infamous Fernleigh Track, a 100% shared path that is free from motor vehicles. A repurposed heavy rail corridor, the track is a joint project between Newcastle and Lake Macquarie councils

The Fernleigh Track is an extremely safe and bike friendly rail-trail taking into rail relics and bush lands throughout the tour.

First, we chat through the tour, get comfortable with your bike getting safety and house keeping out of the way (including COVID-19 safety measures).

The tour provides ample stops for breaks (including rest rooms) and includes insights into Newcastle's rail history, flora, fauna and an insight into our proud Awabakal foundations and how the land was used in days-gone-by.

Notable features include:

  • Fernleigh Tunnel - a curved 181m rail tunnel

  • Whitebridge, Redhead and Jewells stations

  • Echidnas, Lizards, Rosellas, Kookaburras and Bandicoots

  • Wetlands

  • Coastal dune system

  • Rail relics

  • Access to Glenrock National Park

We'll take a detour to one of our favourite coffee shops along the way if time and availability allows.

Sometimes we need to adapt: Our tours may change from time-to-time pending weather conditions, venue operations, venue availability and any adhoc must-see things you can't miss

Note: A basic level of fitness is required to participate in this experience. There are no major inclines however the track has a few steady slopes through the path. Bookers can request that the tour can start or end at either Adamstown or Belmont including one-way (15km) or return (30km) trip options. A shorter trip does not change the trip price.

Included at a locally loved cafe. You will have a chance to advise of your coffee order when you make your booking.

Up to 4 x 8-speed bicycles, helmet and lock.  The bike you will ride is simple, easy to ride and you are sure to fit in like a local. We implement strict COVID-19 safe measures by sanitising all equipment including the bike, helmet and lock.

We'll be snapping photos throughout the tour and will post them on our Facebook page

Unlimited parking is available at Adamstown Station (or nearby)
